Run #391

Hayfield, St. Thomas

Sunday, 21 Apr, 2013

Start Time:
Wheeler Dealer, Count Dracula
Hayfield, St. Thomas is the south end of the historical maroon trail 'Cunha Cunha Pass'. The Cunha Cunha Pass is an 8-kilometre mountain trail, which was first used by the Maroons to travel between the parishes of St Thomas and Portland. It was also an escape route for the Maroons during battles with the British forces. The trail connects Hayfield and other parts of St Thomas with Bowden Pen and the Rio Grande Valley in Portland; via the main ridge of the Blue Mountains. According to oral tradition, the site once ended at a plantation which the Maroons could not or 'cunha cunha' pass. The trail was also an important trade route, particularly before the road was built that linked Morant Bay to Port Antonio. The pass provided passage, by foot and donkey, for produce grown in the upper Rio Grande Valley to markets on the southern plains.

How We Got There:
Drive east through the communities of Bull Bay, Yallahs, Morant Bay. In Port Morant take a left at the Shell gas station. This road will take you to Airy Castle, continue to Ginger Hall (this road takes you to Bath Fountain, however our destination is not Bath). After crossing the bridge, after 100 m take a left turn. This is the beginning of the ascent to Hayfield. Take your time, enjoy the breathtaking views! The road was recently repaired and is in good condition with the exception of about a 1 km section which has no asphalt but is drivable, after this section a newly paved road takes you into the community of Hayfield! Total driving time 2 hours!
